The Swiss National Bureau of Insurance (NBI)

The Swiss National Bureau of Insurance (NBI) compensates for material damage and personal injuries caused by foreign motor vehicles in Switzerland (art. 74 par. 4 of the Swiss Road Traffic Act). The NBI also runs the National Information Centre as specified in Art. 79a of the Swiss Road Traffic Act (calls from Switzerland: 0800 831 831; calls from abroad +41 44 628 89 30). The purpose of the Information Centre is to provide injured parties with binding information on the claims handler that will settle their claims.

Additionally, the NBI coordinates the conclusion of frontier insurance policies for motor vehicles entering Switzerland without sufficient insurance cover. The NBI is financed by a contribution (Art. 76a SVG) collected by the insurance companies from the motorists simultaneously with the motor insurance premium.
